Exam Preparation

  • The API 510 exam is divided into a closed-book portion and an open-book portion, taken back-to-back with a break in between.
  • The closed-book portion allows roughly 2 hours and 45 minutes for about 110 questions; the open-book portion allows roughly 3 hours and 45 minutes for about 60 questions, with a 45-minute break in between for a total exam day of about 7.5 hours.
  • The exam draws from a larger question bank than what's scored; a portion of the total questions are unscored pretest questions.
  • Reference publications (API 510, API RP 571/572/576/577/578, and relevant ASME sections) may be consulted only during the open-book portion.
  • Candidates must meet a combination of education and relevant pressure-vessel experience (acquired within the last 10 years while employed by or under contract with an authorized inspection agency) to qualify to sit for the exam requirements range from 5 years of experience with no formal education down to 1 year of experience with a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering.
  • API 510 certification is valid for a three-year term and is accredited by ANSI.

Each student will receive a Mech Integrity Certificate of Completion for the API 510 training course which lists the CPD hours, and students can also add the certification to their LinkedIn profile.
